According to a report from Channels TV, Nigerian lawyer and political commentator Dele Farotimi has shed light on his first encounter with Peter Obi’s proposal for a one-term presidency, which he says dates back to the 2023 election campaign. Farotimi noted that Obi’s stance on serving only one term was not a recent development but a position he had consistently maintained.
“I first heard Peter Obi mention the one-term presidency idea during the 2023 election cycle,” Farotimi explained. “It wasn’t a surprise to me when he repeated it later—it’s something he’s said before.”
However, the lawyer urged Nigerians to look beyond the length of time a candidate plans to serve and instead interrogate the substance of their policies. “If someone says they want to spend just one term, the real question should be: One term to do what?” he asked. Farotimi argued that leadership should be assessed by the quality and clarity of its vision, not by its duration.
He drew a distinction between ambition and vision, stressing that truly transformative goals often extend beyond a single lifetime. “If I ever run for the presidency of Nigeria, I don’t require more than two years to do everything that I need to do,” he said. “When a leader commits to one term, I want to know exactly what they intend to achieve within that period.”
Farotimi also underscored his belief that significant change can happen quickly, stating that if he were to run for president, he could accomplish his objectives within two years. To reinforce his point, he referenced the mixed legacies of past Nigerian leaders. “Jonathan had six years, Buhari had eight—yet the question remains, what did they do with that time?
