Nigerian human rights activist Dele Farotimi has expressed deep frustration with citizens who continue to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration, despite the growing economic hardship caused by recent reforms—particularly tax increases.
Taking to his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Farotimi criticized the blind loyalty shown by some Nigerians, quoting the words of Nigerian writer and public figure Simon Oladipo. In a sharply worded post, Farotimi lamented how far some people are willing to go to justify government actions, regardless of how extreme or harmful they may be.
‘If Tinubu says he’ll have to tax the air we breathe so that he can fight corruption, there’ll still be people rationalizing and defending it,’ Farotimi wrote. ‘There’s no punishment greater than to be trapped in the same space with those people.’
The comment sparked widespread reactions online. Many users echoed Farotimi’s sentiment, expressing concern over what they see as an unhealthy level of political loyalty that ignores the suffering of ordinary Nigerians. One user commented, “They’ve made an unbreakable covenant with suffering and now want to drag everyone else into their misery.” Another remarked that such supporters “don’t deserve to live among normal human beings,” warning that their mindset could negatively influence others.
Farotimi’s criticism comes amid growing public frustration over Tinubu’s economic policies, which include fuel subsidy removal and widespread tax hikes. These reforms, while intended to stabilize the economy, have led to increased living costs and mounting pressure on the average Nigerian.
