According to a report by Nigerian Tribune on Monday, May 18, 2026, Nigerian instrumentalist and composer, Made Kuti, has explained the reason he chose not to kneel while proposing to his wife, Inedoye Onyenso, stating that marriage, in his view, should be based on mutual understanding rather than a gesture of submission or formality.
He shared this perspective during a recent appearance on the Timeless Podcast aired on Nix Network’s YouTube channel, where he spoke about his personal life and approach to relationships.
Made Kuti, who is known for his musical work and performances within the Afrobeat tradition, said his decision during the proposal was influenced by how he interprets equality in relationships.
He explained that he did not consider it necessary to kneel because both partners had already reached an understanding about their commitment to each other.
According to him, the idea of marriage should reflect partnership rather than one person appearing to beg the other for acceptance.
During the discussion, he described his approach to marriage as one built on shared decisions and mutual respect.
He stated that both individuals in a relationship should see themselves as equals who willingly choose each other without pressure or symbolic gestures that suggest imbalance.
He added that his proposal was based on a clear conversation between him and his partner, where they both agreed on the direction of their relationship before formalising it.
Made Kuti also emphasised that modern relationships can take different forms depending on the values of the individuals involved.
He noted that traditions and cultural expectations often influence how proposals are carried out, but he believes couples should have the freedom to define what works best for them.
According to him, the most important factor in any commitment is understanding and agreement between both parties rather than adherence to specific rituals.
The musician, who is part of the famous Kuti family, is the grandson of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
He has continued the family’s musical legacy while also developing his own identity within the Nigerian and global music scene.
Over the years, he has been involved in projects that blend music with social commentary, continuing a tradition associated with his family’s artistic background.
Made Kuti and his wife, Inedoye Onyenso, were married in a private ceremony held in Lagos in November 2023.
The event was attended by close family members and friends, reflecting a preference for a low-profile celebration rather than a large public gathering.
Since the wedding, the couple has occasionally shared insights into their relationship, focusing on themes such as partnership, communication and mutual respect.
He further explained that his views on marriage are shaped by a belief that relationships function best when both individuals are treated as equals.
According to him, decisions such as marriage proposals should reflect cooperation rather than expectation or obligation.
He maintained that what matters most is the shared commitment between two people who understand each other’s values and intentions.
He said, “I did not go down on my knees when proposing to my wife because I told her it was a mutual decision. We are not begging each other to be with each other.”….Read_More…
