Former presidential candidate Olu Falae has recounted details surrounding his 2015 abduction, revealing what one of the kidnappers allegedly told police investigators after the suspects were arrested.
Falae spoke during an interview from 49:23 on Channels Television while reflecting on the security situation in the country and his personal experience with kidnapping. The elder statesman was abducted in September 2015 from his farm in Ondo State before regaining freedom several days later.
According to him, one of the suspects explained during interrogation that the gang initially sought money to celebrate the Salah festival and decided to target him after receiving information from individuals familiar with the area around his farm.
“One of them told the police that they were going for Salah and they didn’t have enough money. The herdsmen who rears his cattle near my farm told them there is one big farmer here, if you carry him, we will get big money,” Falae said during the interview.
The former Secretary to the Government of the Federation said the confession highlighted the level of collaboration and information-sharing that sometimes aids criminal activities in rural communities.
Falae’s abduction in 2015 drew widespread national attention and renewed concerns over rising insecurity, particularly incidents involving kidnappings for ransom across different parts of Nigeria.
