A stroke happens when blood flow to part of the brain is blocked or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts. It is a medical emergency that can cause permanent disability or death if treatment is delayed.
Although some people experience warning symptoms beforehand, a stroke can also happen suddenly without any advance warning. Knowing the signs can help you act quickly and protect a life.
Here are seven important warning signs everyone should know.
1. Sudden Weakness Or Numbness On One Side Of The Body
One of the most recognizable signs of a stroke is sudden weakness or numbness affecting the face, arm, or leg, particularly on one side. A person may struggle to lift one arm, grip an object, or walk normally. Never ignore sudden weakness, even if it improves after a few minutes.
2. Difficulty Speaking Or Understanding Others
A person experiencing a stroke may suddenly struggle to speak clearly, slur their words, or find the right words. They may also have difficulty understanding simple instructions or following a conversation. These symptoms require immediate medical attention.
3. A Sudden Problem With Vision
Sudden blurred vision, double vision, or loss of vision in one or both eyes can be a warning sign of a stroke. Some people may notice that they cannot see clearly on one side. Any unexplained, sudden change in vision should be treated seriously.
4. Sudden Dizziness Or Loss Of Balance
A stroke can affect the parts of the brain responsible for balance and coordination. A person may suddenly feel extremely unsteady, struggle to walk, or become unable to coordinate their movements. Dizziness accompanied by other neurological symptoms is particularly concerning.
5. A Sudden, Severe Headache
A sudden, unusually severe headache that reaches maximum intensity within seconds or minutes may indicate bleeding in or around the brain. It may occur with vomiting, neck stiffness, or loss of consciousness. This requires emergency medical care, even if other stroke symptoms are absent.
6. Sudden Confusion
A person may suddenly become confused, have difficulty thinking clearly, or struggle to understand what is happening around them. If this change occurs abruptly, particularly alongside speech or movement problems, a stroke may be responsible.
7. Drooping On One Side Of The Face
Ask the person to smile. If one side of their face droops or their smile looks uneven, it may be a sign of a stroke. Facial drooping combined with arm weakness or speech difficulty requires immediate emergency assistance.
