A director of research at the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), Professor Femi Otubanjo, has cast doubt on the electoral viability of the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, describing his southern support structure as largely nonexistent ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking from 10:50 on Arise News on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Professor Otubanjo described the ADC as essentially a vehicle created by Atiku to prosecute his presidential ambition, noting that the former vice president had nursed the idea of floating a political party as far back as before 2019.

Otubanjo observed that while Atiku’s emergence as the ADC presidential candidate was largely predictable, his ability to translate that into a competitive national campaign remains seriously in question, particularly given his weak presence in southern Nigeria.
