Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has defended plans for protests over the reported takeover of land around Jabi Lake in Abuja, saying the area should remain a public green space for residents.

In a video from 4:03 shared by SYMFONI TV, speaking to journalists, Sowore said his group had meetings with people who claimed to be the original owners of the park. According to him, the discussions were held at the FCT Police Command, but he stressed that the matter was beyond private ownership because it involved public interest.

Sowore said he had no reason to personally meet with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over the issue. He added that the minister should have understood the importance of protecting recreational and environmental spaces in Abuja.

He accused Wike of acting as though he was above the law and insisted that citizens also had rights that must be respected. Sowore maintained that residents of Abuja deserve access to green areas that can serve as parks and relaxation centres.

The activist also confirmed that protests would continue as part of efforts to stop any action that could affect the preservation of the Jabi Lake environment.
