A repentant terrorist, Shettima Mohammed, has rejected the use of religion as justification for violent extremism, stating that such actions are rooted in manipulation rather than true Islamic teachings.
Mohammed made this known during an interview from 0:28 on News Central TV while addressing journalists at a rehabilitation camp, where former insurgents are undergoing deradicalisation and reintegration into society.
Speaking candidly about his past and the ideology that once guided him, he said: “There is nowhere in the Quran that commands people to kill others because of religious differences. What we are witnessing is driven more by personal interests and manipulation than by true religious teachings.” He emphasized that many individuals who join extremist groups are misled by false interpretations of religion and exploited by leaders pursuing selfish agendas.
The former fighter explained that his experience in the insurgent group opened his eyes to the gap between what recruits are told and the reality on the ground. According to him, religion is often used as a tool to recruit vulnerable individuals, particularly youths, who may lack proper religious education or are facing economic hardship.
Mohammed also commended the rehabilitation programme, noting that it has helped him and others understand the true teachings of Islam and the importance of peaceful coexistence.
