Dan Nwanyanwu, the chairman of the Zenith Labour Party, has spoken about 27 lawmakers from Rivers State House of Assembly who had announced their defection from PDP to the APC. He said these lawmakers have lost their seats because of this defection. He said the law, specifically Section 109(1)(g) of the Nigerian Constitution, states that if a member of a State House of Assembly leaves the party through which they were elected for another party, they lose their seat.

In a report recently shared by The Sun, Nwanyanwu said former Governor Nyesom Wike once stated that if you are elected under one party’s platform as a lawmaker, you cannot switch to another party and keep your seat. He urged everyone to stop being pretentious about this issue and follow the law as it stands

In Nwanyanwu’s words: “His Excellency would say so too. You cannot win a seat in the State assembly on the platform of a party, you leave it go to another party. You can’t go with the mandate, former Wike said so too, so why are we being pretentious”.
