The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students, Comrade Isa Atiku, has said that any Igbo man backing the All Progressives Congress is, in his personal opinion, either a coward or a hypocrite.

Speaking during an interview from 09:29 with SYMFONI on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Atiku argued that people acting rationally would support the same demands being made by Nnamdi Kanu. He stressed that calling for equal treatment should not be seen as a crime.

He also maintained that when a group feels unfairly treated, the demand to separate should not be criminalised but seen as a reaction to injustice.

Atiku said, “You see, anybody in his right senses will agitate for what Nnamdi Kanu is agitating for. ‘Treat us equally’ is not an offense. If you are not treating us equally, let us leave—what is the offense in this? And this is my own personal view. Now, if I see any Igbo man campaigning for or supporting the APC, my view is that he is either a coward or a hypocrite.”

His remarks come as Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, remains in custody.

Kanu’s case took a major turn on November 20, 2025, when Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced him to life imprisonment.

The court convicted him on seven counts, including terrorism and treasonable felony, pointing to his broadcasts on Radio Biafra and his role in inciting violence across the South-East.

After the ruling, Kanu was moved from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to a correctional facility in Sokoto.

Justice Omotosho held that he should not be held at Kuje Prison, citing his conduct during the trial.

Although his legal team filed an appeal and requested his transfer back to an Abuja facility to ease access to lawyers, the court declined the request in December 2025.
