The National Chairman of the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Hakeem Baba Ahmed, has outlined key expectations ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, emphasizing the need for credibility, open political competition, and broader participation among opposition parties.
Baba Ahmed made these remarks during an interview from 20:52 on Trust TV News on Thursday, April 30, 2026, where he addressed the possibility of opposition alliances and the political landscape leading up to the next election cycle.
He acknowledged that collaboration among opposition groups remains an option but stressed that several conditions must first be met to ensure a fair electoral process. “Well, opposition alliances, those things are all possible. The point I’m making is we have a long way to go. The challenge here is, one, the elections of 2027 must be free, fair, and credible,” he said.
He further highlighted the importance of allowing opposition parties to operate without restrictions, stating that political competition must be conducted on a level playing field. “Second one is that the opposition must fight freely. And where they defeat this government, we’ve defeated a government before. In this country, there’s a history of a president who lost an election,” Baba Ahmed stated.
Referencing the possibility of a change in leadership, he added, “Tinubu can lose an election and the heavens will not fall.”
Baba Ahmed also expressed his outlook on the 2027 elections, linking potential outcomes to current governance approaches. “And in 2027, he will lose in this election. If they continue, especially if they continue with this attitude,” he said.
Addressing narratives surrounding national challenges, he criticized claims that issues such as insecurity and poverty are exaggerated or politically motivated. “There’s nothing wrong with this country. All this fiction about insecurity, the poverty, and whatever is the enemies of Tinubu who are making this thing,” he stated.
He also pointed to individuals within the administration as contributors to the current situation, suggesting that internal dynamics may influence public perception and governance.
“The real enemies of President Tinubu are the people closest to him. The people who speak for him, who speak in such detached manner, who have absolutely no empathy, who are not in touch with the people,” Baba Ahmed said…Read_More…
