Dating is an opportunity to understand someone’s character, values, and intentions before committing to a serious relationship. Although nobody is perfect, certain behaviours should not be ignored because they may lead to emotional pain or an unhealthy relationship. Here are seven red flags to watch out for when dating.
1. They Constantly Lie To You
Honesty is one of the foundations of a healthy relationship. If the person you are dating repeatedly lies about important matters, hides relevant information, or tells different stories whenever you ask questions, pay attention. Everyone can make mistakes, but repeated dishonesty makes it difficult to build trust.
2. They Disrespect You During Arguments
Pay attention to how your partner treats you when things do not go their way. If they regularly insult you, humiliate you, threaten you, or use your weaknesses against you during disagreements, do not dismiss the behaviour as normal relationship drama. You can disagree without destroying each other’s dignity.
3. They Try To Control Everything You Do
A partner who constantly dictates what you wear, who you speak to, where you go, or how you spend your money may be displaying controlling behaviour. There is a difference between expressing concern and trying to control another adult. A healthy relationship allows both people to maintain their independence and personal boundaries.
4. They Refuse To Take Responsibility For Their Mistakes
Nobody gets everything right in a relationship. However, if your partner always blames you, makes excuses, or turns every problem into your fault, resolving disagreements may become difficult. Someone who is willing to build a healthy relationship should be able to acknowledge mistakes, apologise sincerely, and make an effort to change.
5. They Only Show You Love When They Want Something
If your partner becomes affectionate whenever they need money, gifts, favours, or physical intimacy but treats you coldly at other times, pay attention to the pattern. Love should not feel like a transaction in which one person must constantly give something to receive basic affection and respect.
6. They Keep Disrespecting Your Boundaries
Your boundaries matter, whether they concern physical intimacy, privacy, finances, or personal space. If you clearly communicate your limits and your partner repeatedly ignores them, pressures you, or makes you feel guilty for saying no, that is a serious concern. Someone who cares about you should respect your right to make your own decisions.
7. They Use Threats, Intimidation, Or Physical Violence
Never ignore a partner who threatens to hurt you, deliberately frightens you, destroys your belongings to control you, or becomes physically violent. These behaviours are not proof of love or jealousy; they are serious warning signs of abuse. Do not assume that getting married or having a child will automatically change the person. If you feel unsafe, seek help from trusted people and make your safety the priority.
