Friendship should allow both people to have their own opinions, choices and boundaries. If a friend constantly expects you to follow their instructions or becomes upset whenever you disagree, it may be time to establish healthier boundaries. Here are three ways to handle the situation.
1. Learn To Say No Without Feeling Guilty
You do not have to agree with everything your friend suggests. If you are uncomfortable with something, calmly say no and explain your position when necessary. A genuine friend should be able to respect your decision even when they disagree with it.
2. Stop Over-Explaining Your Decisions
You do not need to give a long explanation every time you make a different choice. Constantly defending yourself can make the other person feel as though they have the authority to approve your decisions. Be respectful, but confidently stand by your choices.
3. Set Clear Boundaries
If your friend repeatedly tries to control what you do, have an honest conversation about it. Tell them that you value the friendship but also need the freedom to make your own decisions. If they continue ignoring your boundaries, creating some distance may be necessary.
