Have you ever wondered why your teeth gradually become yellow even though you brush them every day? The truth is that tooth discolouration can result from everyday habits, certain foods and drinks, and changes that occur naturally as you age. If you want to maintain a brighter smile, here are four common mistakes you should avoid.
1. Brushing Your Teeth Incorrectly
Brushing too quickly, missing certain areas, or skipping regular brushing can allow plaque to build up on your teeth. Over time, plaque can harden into tartar, which may appear yellowish or brown. Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste for about two minutes, using a soft-bristled toothbrush. If tartar has already formed, a dental professional can remove it safely.
2. Drinking Too Much Tea, Coffee, or Other Staining Drinks
Tea and coffee contain compounds that can stain the outer surface of your teeth over time. Dark-coloured drinks such as red wine can also contribute to staining. You do not necessarily have to stop drinking tea or coffee, but reducing frequent exposure, drinking water afterwards, and maintaining good oral hygiene can help limit surface stains.
3. Smoking or Using Tobacco Products
Tobacco is a major contributor to yellow and brown tooth stains. Chemicals in tobacco can discolour the tooth surface, while smoking also increases the risk of gum disease and other serious oral health problems. Avoiding tobacco is one of the most effective ways to protect both the appearance of your teeth and your overall oral health.
4. Using Acidic Foods or Drinks Too Frequently Without Protecting Your Enamel
Frequent exposure to acids from soft drinks, citrus juices, and other acidic products can gradually wear away tooth enamel. Because the layer beneath the enamel, called dentine, is naturally yellowish, enamel erosion can make teeth appear more yellow. Limit frequent sipping of acidic drinks, rinse your mouth with water afterwards, and wait about 30–60 minutes before brushing after an acidic meal or drink.
