According to a Sunday 24 of August, 2025, report by The Jerusalem Post, the Israel Defence Forces’ (IDF) Colonel Dr. Jacques Neriah, a former senior officer in Military Intelligence has warned that the Middle East could be on the brink of a new escalation. Speaking a moment earlier, Neriah issued a stark warning about the possibility of a “second round” of conflict involving Iran and its proxy, Hezbollah.
“There is a sense that a war is coming, that Iranian revenge is in the works. The Iranians will not be able to live with this humiliation for long,” he told journalists, Udi Segal and Anat Davidov, referring to recent escalations and covert Israeli actions reportedly targeting Iranian assets.
Neriah revealed that Hezbollah operatives had been instructed to distance themselves from their phones — a typical sign of preparation for conflict or covert operations. This, he suggested, adds to growing signs that a wider confrontation could erupt between Israel and Iranian-backed forces.
Amid these military warnings, Neriah also addressed a significant diplomatic development: emerging political dialogue between Israel and Syria. Although largely overlooked due to the ongoing regional unrest, he emphasized its potential importance.
“If the reports are true, and there will be a meeting between the two leaders, this is huge news. We dreamed of this, we wanted this, and now it is coming true before our eyes,” Neriah said.
He explained that while a full peace agreement may still be out of reach, signs point to a renewed security arrangement reminiscent of the 1974 disengagement agreement between the two countries. According to Neriah, Syrian efforts to intercept Hezbollah weapons shipments mark a significant shift in regional alliances.
“This stems from a convergence of interests. The Syrians want the Israeli front to remain quiet. There is a strategic move here, where Syria, under the rule of Ahmed al-Sharaa, has managed to break the chokehold that Iran tried to place around Israel,” he noted. “The fall of Bashar al-Assad led to the collapse of Hezbollah as a regional force. Iran views the al-Sharaa regime as something that needs to be toppled.”
As diplomatic possibilities surface and military preparations intensify, Israel may be facing a complex crossroads — one that could shape the future of its regional security landscape.
