Former Senator Shehu Sani has said the present situation of ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai mirrors the treatment meted out to many people during his time in office.
Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the Senate, made the remark on Saturday, September 26, 2026, during an interview from 1:19 on Channels Television while assessing El-Rufai’s eight-year tenure as governor of Kaduna State.
The former lawmaker alleged that El-Rufai paid little attention to the rule of law while he held power, accusing him of disobeying court orders and ordering the arrest and detention of several persons.
Sani said, “He was in office, he had no respect for the rule of law, he doesn’t obey court orders, he arrested many people and sent them to jail and today he has found himself in the very place where he has taken so many people to.”
Reflecting further on the administration, the former senator maintained that El-Rufai’s current circumstance should be weighed against the actions he attributed to the former governor while in office.
He described the development as a reversal of fortune, noting that a politician who once wielded the power to influence the detention of others is now facing a similar experience.
Sani has repeatedly referenced incidents from El-Rufai’s time in government while discussing his record in Kaduna State. In one account, he alleged that Islamic clerics from Zaria were arrested and taken to Kaduna prison after they gathered to pray over the retrenchment of some of their colleagues from the state civil service. He said he stepped in and helped secure their release.
The former lawmaker has also cited other cases from the period as part of his broader assessment of how political authority was exercised under El-Rufai.
