In a recent interview with Arise TV from 10:52, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, expressed his dismay over the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) potentially accepting a minimum wage of N62,000. He argued that this amount is grossly inadequate, barely covering transportation costs from Nyanya to Abuja and back, let alone feeding and other expenses.

Lawal emphasized the harsh economic realities facing Nigerian workers, highlighting the need for a more realistic approach to addressing their welfare. He also pointed out that the proposed minimum wage would only benefit government workers, leaving many others vulnerable and without support.

According to him, “Why will Labour agree to accept N62,000 which is not enough to transport a Labourer from Nyanya to Abuja and back. How is he going to feed? Let’s be realistic about it, and these are the issues of the economic prosperity that we are talking about. The economy is down and there’s no other source of revenue for the worker, for the Nigerian and we are only talking about the workers (Government workers). There are other people that will not benefit from this, how will they survive?”…..Sée Móre
