Mike Ozekhome, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, has spoken about the proposed 300% salary increase for judicial officers.
In a video shared by Channels TV from 37:08, Ozekhome said in 2018, Senator Shehu Sani stated that each senator earned 13.8 million naira a month and he was suspended for speaking about it. He compared the salaries of judges in Nigeria to those in other countries. He pointed out that a judge in America earns about $73,000 per year, which equals around 106 million naira. He said in Canada, judges make about 80,000 Canadian dollars annually which equals around 110 million naira and in Germany, a judge earns about 79,000 Euros yearly, which is more than 140 million naira. He argued that considering the rising inflation, the propose 300% salary increase for Nigerian judicial officers is not enough.
