Dr. Katch Ononuju, Director General of the Heritage Centre, has claimed that INEC’s decision to schedule the 2027 election for January 16 was calculated to suppress the Igbo vote. Speaking from 44:54 on SYMFONI’s Nigeria Unfiltered, Ononuju explained that the Igbo undertake the largest annual human migration in Africa between December and January.
Ononuju said, “The Igbos are known in Africa to be the only people that have an annual migration issue. Their annual migration period is between December and January. By the end of January, I start coming back to my station.”
He continued: “And for that particular period to be targeted, it means the Igbos who are committed to migration — when they migrate, you now put election. What are you going to tell me about that?”
Ononuju rejected the explanation that the date was shifted to avoid Ramadan, arguing the Igbo deserve equal consideration. “You saw Lagos when you travel, it becomes empty.
