Founding National Secretary of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Dr. Usman Bugaje has declared that President Bola Tinubu’s biggest political challenge ahead of the 2027 general election is not the opposition but his own administration.
Bugaje made the assertion during an interview from 1:07:38 on SYMFONI’s Niger Unfiltered, where he discussed the political climate ahead of the next presidential election and assessed the performance of the current government.
Reacting to suggestions that opposition parties would face an uphill task in unseating Tinubu, the former ACN chieftain dismissed the notion, insisting that the President’s record in office had already weakened his chances.
According to Bugaje, “I don’t think defeating him is is a problem he has already defeated himself.”
He argued that many Nigerians are increasingly dissatisfied with the country’s economic situation and the hardship experienced since the current administration came into office.
The elder statesman maintained that the outcome of the 2027 election would ultimately depend on whether opposition political parties could present a credible alternative capable of inspiring public confidence.
Bugaje stressed that elections should be contests of ideas rather than personalities, noting that political parties must clearly define their economic and social policies if they hope to earn the trust of Nigerians.
He lamented what he described as the absence of ideological direction among many political parties, saying voters deserve to know what each party stands for beyond campaign slogans.
The former lawmaker also expressed concern over what he called the weakening of democratic institutions, alleging that government actions have contributed to shrinking the political space.
According to him, a healthy democracy requires strong institutions, an independent judiciary and a level playing field for all political parties.
Bugaje further urged opposition leaders to focus on presenting practical solutions to Nigeria’s pressing challenges, including economic recovery, insecurity, unemployment and governance reforms, instead of relying solely on criticism of the ruling party.
He maintained that Nigerians are looking for leaders with clear development plans and the capacity to restore confidence in public institutions.
The political analyst also argued that the country’s future would be determined not merely by electoral alliances but by the quality of ideas presented to the electorate.
His comments come amid growing political realignments and speculation over possible coalition efforts by opposition figures seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, in the 2027 presidential election.
