Tensions flared outside Nigeria’s National Assembly as protesters clashed over allegations of s£xual harassment and abuse of power leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
Demonstrators supporting Akpabio openly criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan, calling on her to withdraw her petition and focus on her family.
The controversy began in February when a dispute over Senate seat arrangements led to a confrontation between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio.
Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of publicly humiliating her and obstructing her legislative duties, allegations that Akpabio has denied.
The situation intensified when Akpoti-Uduaghan formally submitted a petition to the Senate, accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment and abuse of office. However, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions dismissed the petition, citing procedural flaws.
Amidst this backdrop, demonstrators supporting Akpabio gathered outside the National Assembly, openly criticizing Akpoti-Uduaghan and calling on her to withdraw her petition and focus on her family.
During the protest, a vocal supporter of Akpabio told Arise TV News from 0:54, “Natasha should face her husband and leave Akpabio alone. A man is free to look at a woman — that is it. She should stop blackmailing Akpabio. She should stop!”
The protest, which began as a peaceful gathering, quickly turned chaotic when counter-protesters arrived in support of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan. Her supporters demanded an impartial investigation into her allegations against Akpabio and called for her right to carry out her duties without interference.
“Until our demands are met — which is, first, allow her to carry out her duty without any hindrance — we will not leave,” one protester insisted.
