According to Nigerian Tribune, Religious leader Primate Elijah Ayodele has advised former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to reconsider his approach to the 2027 general election. According to Ayodele, Obi should only contest if he is willing to join a coalition against the ruling party, as attempting to challenge President Bola Tinubu alone would be futile.
The advice comes amid growing political speculation surrounding the next presidential election, with opposition parties strategizing on how to unseat the incumbent. Ayodele warned that Tinubu remains a formidable force and that any candidate, including Obi, would struggle to win without forming strategic alliances.
The cleric also suggested that Obi would be wasting financial resources if he decided to contest as an independent candidate. Instead, he urged him to direct his efforts towards philanthropy and social impact initiatives. Ayodele further claimed that many of Obi’s supposed supporters, including some within his ethnic group, might abandon him when it matters most.
Political analysts have noted that opposition unity has historically played a crucial role in Nigerian elections. In 2015, the All Progressives Congress (APC) successfully unseated the then-ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) through a coalition of opposition parties. With this precedent, some believe Obi’s chances in 2027 could be significantly strengthened if he collaborates with other opposition figures.
As the next election cycle approaches, discussions around coalition-building are expected to intensify. Key political players within the PDP, Labour Party, and other opposition groups may explore partnerships to enhance their electoral prospects. Whether Obi will heed the advice and pursue alliances remains to be seen.
