According to a video from 15:38 shared on Facebook on Friday, March 13, 2026, by Mujahid Asari Dokubo, the traditional ruler of Torusarama Piri in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State spoke about misconceptions regarding religion and regional identity in Nigeria. Speaking during a live broadcast, the former militant leader recounted personal experiences that highlight misunderstandings about the presence of Muslims in southern states.

During the broadcast, Dokubo shared a personal story, saying, “My daughter met a very educated Yoruba person, and she asked her, ‘Are there Muslims in Bayelsa State?’” He used the encounter to illustrate the widespread lack of awareness about the diversity of religious communities in the South-South region. According to him, even well-educated individuals from other regions sometimes hold stereotypes or misconceptions about the religious composition of certain states.

The traditional ruler also reflected on how these misconceptions affect social cohesion and representation. He argued that assumptions about the South-South being exclusively Christian contribute to the marginalization of Muslims in political appointments, economic opportunities, and social recognition. Dokubo emphasized that acknowledging the presence and contributions of Muslim communities is essential for promoting fairness and inclusivity across Nigeria.

He further stressed the importance of educating the public on the diversity within regions like Bayelsa and Rivers State. Dokubo noted that understanding the multi-religious makeup of the South-South can help reduce bias and encourage equitable treatment in both government policies and private sector opportunities. He concluded by urging Nigerians to recognize and respect the religious diversity that exists within every region, calling for greater awareness, inclusivity, and balance in national discourse.
