Nobody wants to deal with a stroke later in life, and the habits you build today can affect your risk over time. While no single food or drink can guarantee that you will or will not have a stroke, excessive intake of certain things can contribute to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and other conditions linked to stroke. Here are four things worth limiting.
1. Too much salt
Eating too much salt can raise blood pressure, which is one of the biggest risk factors for stroke. Many people get large amounts of sodium from processed foods, instant noodles, seasoning cubes, canned foods, and salty snacks without realizing it. Reducing your salt intake and choosing more fresh, minimally processed foods can help support healthy blood pressure.
2. Too much sugary food and drinks
Regularly consuming large amounts of sugary drinks, sweets, pastries, and other foods high in added sugar can contribute to weight gain and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes. Diabetes is associated with a higher risk of stroke because it can damage blood vessels over time. Choosing water more often and limiting foods and drinks high in added sugar can be a healthier habit.
3. Too much alcohol
Heavy alcohol consumption can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of stroke and other health problems. If you drink alcohol, keeping your intake low is safer than drinking heavily or frequently. People who do not drink do not need to start for health reasons.
4. Too much unhealthy saturated and trans fat
Frequently eating foods high in unhealthy fats can contribute to high levels of LDL cholesterol, which can contribute to the buildup of plaque in the arteries. This can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke. Try to eat more vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, fish, nuts, and other nutritious foods while limiting foods high in saturated and trans fats.
