In an interview with Arise News from 43:00, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, addressed speculation surrounding his possible presidential candidacy, categorically denying any plans to run. Currently in his second term in the Senate, Kalu expressed his irritation over the persistent rumors regarding his political ambitions.
Kalu posed a rhetorical question, stating, “This is just my second tenure in the Senate, people have had five tenures in the Senate. Why is my own special?” He emphasized that he has no intention of contesting against President Bola Tinubu, whom he referred to as “my friend, my President, and our Leader.”
His statements were clear: “I just said I’m not running as a President and you people are pushing me to run to be President against my friend.” He reiterated his commitment to Tinubu, the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and urged an end to the rumors, saying, “Why can’t you people allow me and allow the sleeping dog to lie? We have a President candidate, and he’s capable.”
The former Governor of Abia State also took the opportunity to defend his contributions in the Senate, countering the notion that the legislative body serves as a “retirement home” for politicians. He highlighted the significant impact he has made since leaving his business career 25 years ago to enter politics. “At my stage, the interest I have found—I left my business 25 years ago, I joined the Senate six years ago, and I’m contributing very well.”
Kalu further praised his work for his constituency, underscoring his commitment to making a meaningful difference. “My constituency will bear witness that I’m adding value. The issue is about adding value,” he concluded.
