PDP Chieftain Segun Showunmi has accused high-ranking All Progressives Congress (APC) members of attempting to forcefully take control of Osun State from the People’s Democratic Party before the upcoming gubernatorial election.

In a recent Channels TV interview from 10:12, Showunmi emphasized the dangerous perceptions such actions create: “Let me tell you the problem with these things. It is the optics, it is the perception, it is the innuendos that eventually create the ripple effect that can cause the society to say enough is enough.”

He warned that political tensions could reach a breaking point, stating, “And let me tell you, there’s always one thing you do and the whole thing will just burst.”

Showunmi argued that the PDP are still contending their election loss in court, he stated, “We have not escaped Edo after the election, and we are in court still trying to manage. And we are saying, let’s just wait until the court speaks. We have not escaped some of the shenanigans in some other locations.”

The PDP leader questioned the wisdom of targeting Osun State, given its cultural significance and it peaceful nature among all the South Western states: “Now, why would you want to take the headquarters of the Yoruba nation where even the Ooni of Ife sits. Where Osun, Osogbo is, and even where people say that you are related to?”

He criticized what he perceives as political homogenization: “Must everything in the country reflect that only the ruling party is right? Must every action in the country suggest that only the ruling party can be supported?”

While rejecting one-party state concerns as unfounded, Segun Showunmi expressed alarm over governance approaches: “I don’t like people who say the country will become a one-party state, because it can never be a one-party state. But what I’m seeing is some immature handling of the delicate fiber of the nation. I expect that the longer you stand in democracy, the more peaceful the democratic atmosphere becomes.”
