President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has cancelled the traditional national broadcast earlier scheduled to commemorate Nigeria’s 26th Democracy Day anniversary, opting instead to deliver his Democracy Day address from the National Assembly.
According to Vanguard, the change in plans was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, Mr. Segun Imohiosen.
According to the statement, the decision was made due to President Tinubu’s confirmed participation in a special joint session of the National Assembly on Thursday, June 12.
“Due to President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled.
President Tinubu will deliver his address from the National Assembly,” Imohiosen stated.
The move marks a departure from the traditional early morning broadcast delivered from the Presidential Villa.
Instead, Tinubu is expected to address the nation directly from the legislative chambers at noon.
The rest of the scheduled Democracy Day activities will proceed as planned.
Earlier, a notice circulated to media houses also announced the cancellation of the traditional military parade, a key feature of Democracy Day commemorations.
No official reason was given for the parade’s cancellation.
The revised schedule was detailed in a memo signed by Abdulhakeem Adeoye on behalf of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
It outlined four key events: the cancelled broadcast, no military parade, Tinubu’s address at the National Assembly by 12 noon, and a public lecture at 4 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
This year’s Democracy Day celebration is themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms,” underscoring the administration’s focus on institutional transformation and democratic deepening.
