During pregnancy, many women notice a dark vertical line running from the belly button down toward the pubic area. This line is called the linea nigra, and although it can look unusual, it is a completely normal change that happens to many pregnant women.

1. Hormonal changes cause it

Pregnancy causes major hormonal changes in the body. These hormones can increase the production of melanin, the pigment that gives the skin its colour, making the natural line on the abdomen appear much darker.

2. It becomes more visible during pregnancy

The line can become noticeable as pregnancy progresses, especially during the second and third trimesters. It may be more prominent in women with darker skin tones.

3. It does not harm the baby

The dark line is simply a change in skin pigmentation. It does not affect the baby or indicate that there is a problem with the pregnancy.

4. Does the line have a function?

The linea nigra does not have any known essential function during pregnancy. It is mainly the result of increased pigmentation caused by hormonal changes. Some theories suggest it may have helped newborns locate the breast, but this has not been confirmed as its actual biological purpose.

5. It usually fades after childbirth

After delivery, pregnancy hormones gradually decrease and the dark line usually becomes lighter over time. For some women, however, it may take several months or remain slightly visible.
