Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has recounted a tragic event that took place during Ibrahim Shekarau’s tenure as governor of Kano State.

In a live coverage by Symfoni TV from 14:12, Obasanjo said a Muslim cleric was shot and killed while leading early morning prayers in his mosque on a Friday. He said news of the incident shook him.

Obasanjo said that he immediately called Shekarau upon hearing the news and urged him to act swiftly. He said Shekarau responded promptly, and together, they were able to calm the situation

In Obasanjo’s words: “When I was president, there was that clergyman early in the morning who was leading prayers and he was shot and killed. When I received the news I was shaken. A Muslim clergyman on a Friday during early morning prayer inside his mosque was shot dead. You can’t have any incendiary more than that. I called you (Shekarau) and I said have you heard about it and you said yes, you are waiting for the day to break and I said the day has broken”
