According to Punch, Rivers State Administrator Ibok-Ete Ibas has refuted claims circulating on social media about approval to recruit 10,000 workers into the state civil service. The fake announcement was attributed to the Secretary to the Rivers State Government, Ibibia Worika. “We wish to inform the people of Rivers State and the general public that this is false and ask that this fake announcement be ignored,” stated Inyingi Brown, the acting head of civil service.
“Appropriate information will be released by the Rivers State Civil Service Commission in due time,” Brown added. Mr. Ibas, a retired vice admiral, became sole administrator after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency and suspended all elected officials, including Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Upon taking office, Ibas dissolved existing boards before reconstituting key commissions.
The Supreme Court had previously ruled that “the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers are legitimate members of the Rivers assembly,” invalidating local elections and ordering “Governor Fubara to represent the already signed Rivers 2025 budget to the reinstated pro-Wike lawmakers.” These directives addressed the political crisis stemming from the feud between Governor Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike, now FCT minister.
Following Fubara’s failure to meet the budget deadline despite beginning to implement parts of the court verdict, President Tinubu declared emergency rule, suspended Governor Fubara and appointed Ibas as sole administrator. This measure has sparked controversy, with the Nigerian Bar Association moving its annual conference from Rivers in protest against the emergency rule.
