Bayelsa State was thrown into chaos on Saturday as gunmen disrupted a political rally organized in support of former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike.
The incident, captured in a video shared by Voice TV Nigeria showed scenes of confusion as shots rang out forcing many to flee for safety.
In the aftermath, the Ijaw Youth Council strongly condemned the incident laying the blame squarely on Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri.
A spokesperson for the group declared, “This is anti-democratic, and that position should be made known. We will take a protest after this rally to the Government House and send a strong signal to the Nigerian state that the governor has failed to provide security in the state.”
Despite the violence, the youths vowed to continue with their scheduled program. “We will go ahead with our program whether they like it or not. I want to assure Bayelsans and members of the new associates that a new dawn has come and history will be made today,” the spokesperson added.
The disruption raises serious concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Bayelsa, particularly as the state gears up for key political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections. Critics argue that Governor Diri’s administration has not done enough to curb rising violence and political intimidation.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the attack or identify those responsible for the disruption. However, security agencies have reportedly been deployed to maintain order in Yenagoa, the state capital.
Political observers warn that if not addressed, the breakdown of law and order could erode public confidence in the state’s leadership and jeopardize upcoming electoral processes.
