According to a report by Al Jazeera on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Ofer Bronchtein, who serves as the special envoy of French President Emmanuel Macron for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, addressed the ongoing crisis while speaking from New York during the United Nations General Assembly.
Bronchtein strongly criticized both Israel and the United States, accusing them of failing to present a clear strategy for the post-war situation in Gaza. He stressed that once hostilities end and captives are freed, there must be a defined roadmap. In his words, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict cannot be resolved through military force, as war has repeatedly shown itself incapable of delivering lasting peace. Instead, he argued that only diplomacy and firm political decisions will provide a path forward.
The envoy revealed that France is ready to move towards recognizing a Palestinian state once the conflict is over. He further explained that several European countries are likely to follow this direction, highlighting a growing consensus on the need for a political breakthrough in the region. Without such measures, he warned, the violence would only persist.
Turning his focus to the West Bank, Bronchtein emphasized that the land remains under Israeli occupation. He condemned Israel’s refusal to acknowledge this fact and its threats of annexation. He issued a clear warning that France views such moves as acts of aggression, stressing that “we will deal with Israel like we are dealing with Russia for what it is doing in Ukraine.”
In his remarks, he also questioned whether the current Israeli leadership truly reflects the best interests of its citizens. According to him, Israel’s government is increasingly isolating the nation internationally through policies that fuel conflict rather than resolve it.
Bronchtein also directed a message to Hamas, urging the group to release all hostages currently held in Gaza. He stated that as long as hostages remain in captivity, Israel would continue to justify military operations, prolonging the destruction and humanitarian suffering.
