The former governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, voiced serious concerns about Nigeria’s political decline. He made this statement during an interview with The Sun.
El-Rufai was asked about the SDP’s stance on the rotation of power in the 2027 presidential election; he responded that the party is not currently searching for a candidate.
According to him, they are currently seeking devoted party members who are prepared to work and advance the party rather than candidates.
In his words, “This country is facing an existential crisis. We may not have a country for you to contest for president if we continue the way we’re going or if things get worse.”
“So for me, I do not care where the person comes from. But I want a candidate and a ticket that will do two things: that will offer solutions to Nigeria’s problems.”
El-Rufai further pointed out that they need a candidate who will motivate Nigerians to vote and overthrow the government of the All Progressives Congress, which is causing the country to regress.
He declared that he no longer believed that the presidency had to come from a particular area. He clarified that he would back any capable and forward-thinking candidate, no matter where they were from, provided they could deal with the most important problems facing Nigeria.
He pointed out that although he had previously supported the relocation of power, the outcomes had not produced the anticipated advancement.
He said Nigeria had gotten worse and the government is not doing enough to address the problems that ordinary Nigerians, aside from those in positions of authority, are facing. El-Rufai emphasized that going forward, he would prioritize leadership capable of addressing and resolving Nigeria’s core issues over regional sentiments.
