During an interview with Arise Television from 14:13, Chille Igbawua, a former member of the House of Representatives, expressed disappointment over what he described as growing ethnic and sectional bias in the Tinubu administration. He said northern voters backed Bola Tinubu in 2023 despite his southern origin, believing he would lead with fairness and national unity in mind.
Igbawua noted that the North gave Tinubu significant electoral support, contributing to his victory, but that support, he said, came with expectations. He explained that northerners believed the president would be even-handed in his appointments and governance style, not lean into favoritism or sectional interests. However, the current reality, he said, betrays that hope.
According to him, “He’s not a northerner, but he got 64% from the North. So what we’re saying is, we’re not saying don’t vote for somebody who is not a northerner. No, we always knew him not to be a northerner, and yet he got his victory votes from the north. Without the north, he would never have been president today. So we’re mobilizing the people. Look, we got Mr. President into the seat in the expectation that he’ll be a fair-minded person who will treat everybody equally without bringing up those sentiments of sectionalism or ethnicity. But we have seen that that’s exactly what this government has done.”
