According to Vanguard, A man from Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, has been arrested for allegedly setting his wife, Chioma Nwana, on fire following accusations of infidelity. The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening at their residence in Eziezekwe village.
Chioma, a mother of six, suffered severe burns and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday morning.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that the altercation began when the husband accused Chioma of returning home after spending time with a supposed lover. During the confrontation, tempers flared, leading the man to retrieve a container of petrol, pour it on her, and ignite it.
A neighbor who spoke anonymously said, “We heard loud screams and rushed to the scene, only to find Chioma engulfed in flames. It was a horrifying sight. We immediately called for help and rushed her to the hospital, but it was too late.”
Another resident added that the husband had been complaining about rumors circulating in the village about his wife’s alleged infidelity. “He said people were mocking him, and it seemed to have pushed him over the edge,” the resident said.
Following the incident, the husband reportedly walked to the Abagana Divisional Police Station and turned himself in, confessing to the crime. “He claimed his wife’s alleged affairs were being used to ridicule him in the community,” a source at the station disclosed.
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Ikenga Tochukwu, confirmed the arrest. “The suspect is currently in custody. Unfortunately, the victim passed away on Wednesday morning. The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, has directed that the case be transferred to the Homicide Unit for thorough investigation,” he said.
The incident has sparked outrage and sorrow in the Eziezekwe community. Many residents expressed shock over the tragic turn of events, describing Chioma as a devoted mother who did not deserve such a fate.
A community leader, who declined to be named, called for justice. “This is a terrible tragedy. Domestic issues should never escalate to such violence. We hope the authorities ensure that justice is served,” he said.
