In a recent statement reported by the Nigerian Tribune, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, Chairman of United Nigeria Airlines and a respected political economist, has called for a shift in focus for President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Okonkwo emphasized the importance of legacy-building over wealth accumulation for the President.
Okonkwo asserted that those in Tinubu’s inner circle have a crucial responsibility. He stated, “The only thing anybody around Tinubu owes him, if you love him, is to help him to leave a legacy.” The professor acknowledged Tinubu’s well-known financial status, saying, “We have known him as somebody who is stupendously rich, who knows how to spend money. So, making money can no longer be his focus.”
Highlighting the need for a change in priorities, Okonkwo remarked, “Therefore, the only thing I know that should be his desire, and those who think they care about him must do, is to help him leave a great legacy for this country.”
The political economist expressed doubts about the effectiveness of the President’s current team. He candidly observed, “I believe that the team that has been with him surely has not proven that they are a winning team. So, I think he should know it, and they know it.”
Okonkwo reiterated his previous call for a cabinet reshuffle, stating, “I called for the change of the cabinet on the first anniversary of his inauguration.” He emphasized the urgency of this action, adding, “But, if it is going to happen now, it is even overdue. It is highly necessary.”
This critique from a prominent business leader and economist underscores growing concerns about the direction and effectiveness of Tinubu’s administration.
