Special Adviser to the President on Media and Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala has highlighted the enormous cost of the United States’ 21-year military involvement in Afghanistan, describing it as a lesson in the complexity of global security operations.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News from 10:21, Bwala noted that despite America’s vast military resources and advanced intelligence network, the war in Afghanistan demonstrates how prolonged conflicts can drain a nation’s finances, manpower, and morale.

“They stayed 21 years and spent $2.4 trillion, lost 18 CIA high-valued operatives, 20,800 military contractors and did a lot of damages,” Bwala said.

He explained that the figures reveal the immense human and financial toll of sustained military operations and the limitations of force in resolving deep-rooted insurgencies. According to him, this example should encourage nations, including Nigeria, to approach their own security challenges with patience, comprehensive strategy, and collaboration rather than expecting quick fixes.

Bwala stated that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is mindful of these realities and is adopting a balanced approach that combines military action, intelligence reform, and socioeconomic interventions to combat terrorism and insecurity. He emphasized that the government is learning from global experiences, including America’s, to avoid unnecessary waste and ensure lasting results.

“The United States’ experience shows that fighting terrorism requires more than weapons; it requires clear vision, local cooperation, and long-term investment in peacebuilding,” he added. View, More,
