Two state governors, Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano and Monday Okpebholo of Edo, on Monday visited Torankawa village in Bunkure Local Government Area, Kano State, to condole with families of 16 hunters killed in Uromi, Edo State.
The hunters, who were traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for the Sallah celebration, were intercepted and lynched by vigilantes in Uromi, sparking nationwide condemnation. Their deaths have triggered tension in Torankawa, with hunters from surrounding villages assembling in protest.
Torankawa, a small agrarian community with limited government presence, has rarely drawn attention from top political figures. However, the presence of two sitting governors in the village underscored the severity of the incident.
According to DAILY TRUST, crowds gathered as the governors arrived, with villagers carrying placards demanding justice. Women and youths called for accountability, insisting the victims were innocent travelers.
One of the mourners in the village, an elderly man, stated: “We have never seen a senator in this village, but today, we have seen two governors.”
Another victim added: “We are hopeful of justice.”
In response, 1Governor Okpebholo assured the community that the Edo State government was committed to justice, confirming that 14 suspects had been arrested.
Governor Yusuf, in turn, stated: “It is a known fact that our people were traveling from Port Harcourt through Edo State when they were brutally attacked. Many were maimed, burnt and murdered in cold blood. We appeal to you to ensure that they are not only arrested but also paraded publicly so that the world sees those responsible for this heinous crime.”
