Dr. Samson G. Simon has said that the security situation in Burkina Faso has worsened under the leadership of military ruler Ibrahim Traoré, despite widespread praise and support from some sections of the public.
He pointed out that many of Traoré’s supporters refuse to accept facts. “I tried pointing that out on social media and all I got was just insults, abuses and some people were even calling me uh a betrayer.”
Dr. Samson questioned the narrative that Traoré has performed exceptionally. “I’m not saying Ibraham has not done anything but there’s nothing exceptional that some of these African leaders they were complaining about have not actually done.”
He said Traoré failed to fulfill his initial promise. “When he came on board he said he was going to defeat the insurgents in two to three months. Sadly he has been there for almost 3 years and he has failed wfully and that’s the truth.”
According to him, “Under Traoré, things have actually gotten worse. More people got killed on his watch in 2023 than in 2022… by a factor of 304.” He added, “Many of the things are just propaganda… deep fakes… it’s obvious that it’s propaganda.”
On France, he said, “There is no empirical evidence to show that the French are actually the ones fueling the insurgency in Burkina Faso.”
He warned against turning to Russia. “Russia too has imperialist tendencies… Look at what they doing with Ukraine.”
Dr. Samson concluded, “We cannot afford to go back to where we are coming from. Dictatorship, military dictatorship… Ibraham is not an example for any African country.”
