Oladipupo Olatunde Adebutu, a former PDP gubernatorial candidate, has responded to accusations that he was involved in violent incidents during the recent local government elections. Speaking in an interview with Channels Television from 4.41, Adebutu denied the allegations and explained the role of the policemen attached to him.
According to Adebutu, he did not leave his house on election day because he already knew the results would be manipulated. Instead, he allowed his aide and family members to vote. He revealed that after his aide finished voting, they were attacked by armed thugs, which led to a shootout. The policemen attached to him returned fire to defend themselves and are now receiving treatment in the hospital.
“These policemen have been approved for me since December 2022 because I’ve been living under constant threat,” Adebutu stated. He explained that the policemen were assigned to him by the Inspector General of Police to protect him due to ongoing violence in his community. He added that he has been forced to drive around in armored vehicles because of the danger posed by what he described as a violent government.
Adebutu emphasized that the attackers who shot at his policemen should face justice. “In a sane society, shòoting at a policeman is a serious crime. Those responsible should be arrested and prosecuted,” he said.
He also pointed out that this wasn’t the first time he and his supporters faced violence. “During the 2023 elections, similar incidents happened. The police reports prove it,” Adebutu concluded, expressing frustration that the perpetrators remain free.
