In Abuja, retired police officers have voiced strong dissatisfaction with the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

In the video, CSP Raphael, coordinator of the National Retired Police Officers Forum, highlighted a case where an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), after 35 years of service, received a lump sum of ₦1.5 million and is now entitled to ₦17,000 monthly.

This situation has sparked widespread frustration among retirees. The CPS, introduced in 2004 to replace the Defined Benefit Scheme, aims to ensure sustainable pension payments.

However, many retirees argue that the scheme’s management by the Pension Commission (PENCOM) is inadequate, leading to meager payouts ranging from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000 monthly amidst rising inflation.

Protests have escalated, with retirees locking down the National Assembly on October 9, 2025, demanding removal from the CPS. Activists like Omoyele Sowore have labeled the scheme a “Ponzi scam,” exacerbating financial hardship for officers. Widows have also reported deaths due to economic strain, urging a return to pre-CPS benefits.

The government faces pressure to address these concerns, as the pension issue continues to fuel nationwide demonstrations.

The debate centers on whether the CPS adequately supports retirees after decades of service, or if reforms are necessary to ensure dignified post-service lives. See, More, Here>>>
