According to a report by the Punch on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, a dramatic political storm is gathering as former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, revealed that several governors and high-ranking All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders are secretly backing an opposition coalition to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
In a blunt interview aired on TVC News’ Beyond the Headlines, Lawal, who recently quit the APC, disclosed that internal frustrations and rising discontent within the ruling party are pushing its members to seek a new political direction—even if it means working behind the scenes with their supposed rivals.
“Some APC members, including governors, are already working with us. They just haven’t spoken out publicly yet,” Lawal said. “They share the vision for a better Nigeria, even if they’re not as vocal as I am.”
His resignation from the APC on June 29 was followed by a bombshell admission: he had long been sabotaging the party’s interests from within due to its autocratic leadership and intolerance of internal criticism.
“The APC has become a party of intimidation where even offering honest advice is seen as rebellion. You’re either silent or labeled an enemy,” Lawal stated.
Citing Rivers State’s Nyesom Wike as a political model for dual-party maneuvering, Lawal declared that working from within a party while supporting the opposition is now a legitimate strategy in Nigeria’s evolving democracy.
Lawal didn’t hold back on his disappointment with President Tinubu’s leadership, noting that many of the president’s former allies feel betrayed by his governance style.
“There’s nothing wrong if Tinubu’s former supporters feel disappointed and join a movement for change. We want a government that delivers—not one that writes results and stifles competition,” he added, referring to alleged rigging and lack of internal party democracy.
He also mocked the influx of politicians defecting into the APC, saying the moves are driven by selfish survival instincts rather than ideological alignment.
“There will be no primaries, and no other candidate will be allowed to raise their head. The president has already given himself an automatic ticket. That’s why they’re rushing to join him—to protect their political futures. But the people aren’t following them,” he remarked.
Lawal clarified that the emerging coalition is not led by any single figure like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, or Rotimi Amaechi. Instead, he said it is a united front forged by various political actors with one mission—to remove the APC from power.
