Former lawmaker representing Osun Central Senatorial District, Senator Olusola Adeyeye, has revealed that the only person who opposed his bid for a third term in the Senate was Rauf Aregbesola.
During an interview with Channels TV from 5:15, Adeyeye explained that many prominent figures in his party encouraged him to seek re-election, but Rauf Aregbesola opposed the idea, citing the political situation in Osun at the time.
According to him, Aregbesola told him that sacrifices were necessary to strengthen the party’s chances, particularly in the governorship election.
Adeyeye noted that his senatorial constituency was the party’s strongest, while his local government was the smallest. He said although he was confident of winning if he contested, he acknowledged that his candidacy could make it more challenging for the party to secure the governorship seat. He said that as a result of the situation of things, he decided to step down despite the fact that he had support from other influential party leaders.
He said, “Many of the biggest names in my party suggested that I should go for a third term. The only person who didn’t want me to go for a third term was Rauf Aregbesola and he told me the reason; that the situation we were having in Osun at that time, was such that some people have to make sacrifice.
“It so happened that my senatorial constituency was the strongest for our party, and I happen to come from the smallest local government. If I should return, I would have won, no question. But, if I should return, it might not make it easy for us to win the governorship and that’s why I chose to step down even though other leaders, some, who are are even bigger than Rauf wanted me to come back.”
