The National Co-ordinator of the Coalition of Northern Groups, Jamilu Charanchi has alleged that due to the dry season in the Northern part of the country, herders migrate from the North to the South in search of more fertile grazing lands.
Speaking on the climatic challenges faced by Northern Nigeria, he noted that the region relies on a single rainy season in a year. He also identified that some herders move to the South primarily to find food and improve their living conditions.
He said in an interview with Arise TV From 12:03, ”In Northern Nigeria, we are only experiencing a one rainy season and you will only get that green pastures in that one rainy season. When it is dry season, then the animals will not get greener pastures. The herders have to move from the North to the South because of greener pastures.
But when there is development, things will begin to settle. And that is why there is rural migration. People are looking for what to eat and how to live their lives. I believe that if the local government money is used judiciously, I doubt if the herders will even have the intention to move from one place to another.”….Sée Móre
