Rotimi Amaechi, the former minister of transportation, charged the government with corruption, claiming that the gains from the elimination of fuel subsidies were going to the wealthy instead of the Nigerian people. According to the Daily Post, he made this assertion at an Abuja event celebrating his 60th birthday.
Amaechi attacked the administration for misusing resources that ought to have gone to vital areas like healthcare and education and taking advantage of poverty.
He claimed that rather than easing the suffering of common people, government actions were making it worse.
Amaechi claimed that officials were embezzling the money obtained from the policy and that the elimination of the fuel subsidy had been carried out without sufficient planning or thought given to how it would affect the general public.
In order to guarantee that public funds are utilized for the benefit of all Nigerians, he said, improved governance is required.
“They are using poverty as a weapon by embezzling funds that could have been utilized to construct schools and hospitals.” They stand to gain financially from the elimination of fuel subsidies,” he stated.
