In a significant ruling, the Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, challenging the leadership of the state’s House of Assembly, which is headed by Martin Amaewhule.
The five-member panel, led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, struck down the appeal, highlighting that the case had been withdrawn by Fubara’s counsel, Yusuf Ali.
Justice Abba-Aji, in delivering the judgment, also imposed a cost of N2 million against Governor Fubara.
This amount is to be paid to the Rivers State House of Assembly, the first respondent in the case, and to Martin Amaewhule, the second respondent.
According to Channels Television, the dispute centers on the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly, with Fubara previously contesting the legitimacy of Amaewhule’s leadership.
However, the withdrawal of the appeal has brought a conclusion to the matter, with the court ruling in favor of the Assembly’s current leadership.
The ruling has attracted attention across the state, with the Rivers State House of Assembly set to receive the awarded cost.
This decision is seen as a significant moment in the ongoing political developments within Rivers State.
Governor Fubara’s legal team has not yet issued a statement regarding the withdrawal of the appeal.
Further developments on this case are expected, as the political situation in Rivers continues to unfold.
