According to a report by Daily Post, on Thursday, November 6, 2025, prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has issued a strong warning to human rights lawyer, Malcolm Emokiniovo Omirhobo, over remarks he described as defamatory and dangerous to national unity. Gumi stated that the lawyer’s comments were false, malicious, and capable of creating religious unrest across Nigeria.
Through a statement shared on his verified Facebook page, Sheikh Gumi demanded that Omirhobo immediately withdraw his allegations and offer a public apology.
He gave the lawyer a 48 hours ultimatum to retract the statement or face legal action for defamation and incitement capable of breaching public peace.
In his message, the cleric made it clear that failure to comply would leave him with no choice but to pursue the matter in court.
According to Gumi, no one should be allowed to make reckless accusations under the guise of activism, especially when such statements can trigger division among Nigerians of different faiths.
The legal threat follows a recent public statement by Omirhobo titled “Terrorism Apology Is a Crime, Government Must Investigate and Prosecute Sheikh Ahmad Gumi”.
In the publication, the lawyer accused the Islamic scholar of defending terrorists and called on the government to arrest and prosecute him in line with national laws.
Omirhobo referenced the 1999 Constitution, the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act of 2022, and the Criminal Code Act, arguing that Gumi’s past interactions and comments about bandits could be seen as acts promoting terrorism.
His call for investigation and prosecution has since stirred heated debates on social media, with many Nigerians expressing mixed reactions to the unfolding tension between both men. View, More,
