In a tweet posted on his official X handle (formerly Twitter), Nigerian senator and activist Shehu Sani has expressed his views on the reported overthrow of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Sani described the development as “welcome,” criticizing the decades-long rule of the Assad family for weakening and impoverishing Syria, a nation of immense historical and cultural significance.
“The overthrow of Assad in Syria is a welcome development. The decades of family dynasty have only weakened and impoverished such a great country of historical significance to humanity,” Sani wrote.
However, Sani also issued a cautionary note to the Syrian rebels and the broader population. Drawing parallels with the aftermath of the Libyan revolution, he urged Syrians to avoid the mistakes that plunged Libya into chaos following the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. “The Syrian Rebels and the Syrian people must take lessons from the tragedy of Libya after Gaddafi,” he warned. Sani pointed out that while many nations might support efforts to overthrow a government, few would be willing to invest the resources necessary to rebuild a country devastated by war.
“There are many nations that can help you to wage war and overthrow your Government, but there are none who will commit their resources to rebuild your country,” he concluded.
