Former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatization, Senator Ayo Arise, has weighed in on the controversy between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, questioning her handling of the situation.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV today, Senator Arise acknowledged that public sympathy often leans toward women in such cases but raised concerns about how Akpoti-Uduaghan chose to address her allegations.
“Generally, there is sympathy towards women when such things occur, but the question of how she handled it is still another issue that the public is a little bit uncomfortable with,” he said.
The controversy erupted after Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sexual harassment, alleging that he made inappropriate advances towards her during a visit to his residence. However, Senator Arise suggested that she could have handled the situation differently.
“If she were president of Nigeria, will she accuse anybody of sexual harassment? Because, I mean, she is a Senator, and what happens to no?” he questioned.
Arise specifically pointed out that the allegations involved Akpabio holding her hand and argued that she could have responded immediately.
“When you say somebody is harassing you sexually, the Senate President held her hand in his house. She could have removed his hand from her hand and said, ‘OK, this is a no-go area,'” he added.
The Senate has since suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months, a decision that has sparked mixed reactions. While some argue the Senate acted appropriately, others claim she is being silenced.
As the situation continues to develop, questions remain about the political and ethical implications of the case.
