According to Vanguard, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has reiterated his unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing that he harbors no regrets for backing Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election. Wike, who previously served as the Governor of Rivers State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), chose to support Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) over his party’s candidate, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
During a luncheon honoring the 10th Rivers State House of Assembly in Port Harcourt, Wike addressed criticisms stemming from his political decisions. He stated that his support for Tinubu was rooted in a commitment to equity, fairness, and justice, and he remains steadfast in his choices. Wike acknowledged that his actions have positioned him as a contentious figure within certain political circles but asserted that he would continue to challenge those who oppose his stance.
Furthermore, Wike responded to remarks made by Atiku Abubakar following the October 5th local government elections in Rivers State. Atiku had suggested that the election results indicated a rejection of Wike by the state’s populace. In a pointed rebuttal, Wike highlighted Atiku’s multiple unsuccessful presidential bids, implying that Nigerians have consistently rejected Atiku’s leadership aspirations. He emphasized that his own political choices were guided by principles and the best interests of Rivers State.
In addition to addressing his support for Tinubu and his differences with Atiku, Wike criticized Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for allegedly disrespecting esteemed elders and leaders within the state. Wike expressed disappointment over Fubara’s purported insults directed at prominent figures such as former Nigeria Bar Association President OCJ Okocha, King Sergeant Awuse, and Chief Ferdinand Anabraba. He referred to these individuals as the “Three Wise Men” who played pivotal roles in Fubara’s emergence as governor and condemned any actions undermining their contributions and status.
